About this survey

The Common Koel is a migratory species that arrives in Australia from south-east Asia to breed in spring. It is a type of cuckoo, and it lays its eggs in the nests of a range of other bird species. Although rarely seen, the Koel is well known to many Australians for its loud, repetitive calls, particularly in the early morning.

The main aims of this survey are to document Koel arrival dates in different parts of Australia and to monitor changes in the species' distribution in the places where people live. The secondary aims are to investigate their calling behaviour and to document the other bird species that raise their young.
