Don’t spend the rest of winter inside. Take advantage of the next sunny winter’s day to warm up and check out the birds in your garden this June-July 2018.
Head over to Birdata and get your Birds in Backyards Winter Survey in today.
Getting started is easy. If you don't have a Birdata account, sign up for one today. Then read the instructions or watch the video below.
If you've submitted your survey via the Birdata app, please make sure to log in on the web version and complete your site details. You'll only have to do this once (unless you change anything in your site). A full version of the Birds in Backyards survey on the Birdata app is on it's way!
Top three reasons for surveying this winter:
1. Birdwatching is fun!
You can do it almost anywhere and it never gets boring, there is always something new to learn. You can survey alone or in a group – it’s a great way to spend time with the family or meet your neighbours. Plus, you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy birds.
2. It's good for you
Birdwatching connects you to the environment. By noting what’s happening around you, it helps you consider what you could do in your space to help our birds (or reinforce what you already have in your garden!). Increasingly, scientific evidence is linking positive mental and physical health with nature. A survey a day (or quarter) keeps the doctor away!
3. It's good for the birds
Your surveys can start to show us how our urban birds and their habitats are changing. The more you participate, the bigger and clearer our picture becomes. Just one quick 20 minute survey every quarter - that's only four times a year - can contribute so much information on how our feathered friends are faring through the seasons.
Upcoming survey dates:
- Spring: Sept-Oct 2018 (and don’t forget about Bird Week and the Aussie Backyard Bird Count 22-28 Oct 2018)
- Summer: Dec 2018-Jan 2019
