Found this fella feeding on frogs in the long grass yesterday. Unfortunately the sight of the guy with the camera put him off his meal. My must gets include, longer lens and quieter shoes.

I love the "take off", those wings are just majestic.You must have been fairly close, you just have to practice the sneaking up. (don't get bitten by a snake though)
Your Pacific Heron is in breeding plumage , look at the red on his wings and shoulders. Beautiful, isn't it?
You did a great job getting that close, they are very shy. Only putting up my photo to show the red breeding colours on the bird's shoulders, just like on your bird.

Sorry, my photo is very fuzzy, not as good as yours, I didn't have a big lens either, and there was no way sneaking across a lake. LOL

Thanks for the picture and the info on the red in plumage, I've learnt lots in the last two months including learning how little I actually know.
As for me not being seen, it's a bit like hiding a dump truck behind a bicycle rack, I'm working on "still" as the best possible compromise. :-)
