Pictorella Mannikans

These little finch-like birds are not quite as gregarious as the Finches or as numerous at the moment, and I thought the only chances I would get is a group from afar until one of them decided to have a drink closer to where I was sitting. These photos were taken at Newcastle Waters, NT

How lucky are you to capture these finches in the wild . Pictorella finches are not that common . Closely related to Chestnut and Yellow rump finches allthough they are not part of the Lonchura family .

Great pics

Morcombe's notes on this species are interesting. He says

  • there's considerable variation between individuals but there's "no significant regional variation"
  • they're highly nomadic & gravitate towards the coast when arid conditions return to the non coastal part of their range
