Photo's from the weekend + Monday

Just some photos i took over the weekend and today.

Our rare visitor for the weekend

and another one

My yellow little friend, the yellow thornbill

and another one

And finally, a baby indo mynah

This weekend was filled with action! Finding a nice place beside a dam i was waiting for the noisy reed warbler to come out, and then I saw one. Posed with my camera I begin to aim it when I hear something move. A RED BELLIED BLACK SNAKE!! Now I'm not the type of guy who goes and tests out the thingy that they won't attack you unless corenerd, so instead i run away as fast as I can, climb the barbwire fence (in which I cut myself three times) and then proceeded to run to my bedroom and lie down. A very eventful day, unfortunately did not get a shot of the snake or warbler :(, pretty bad!

Hope you enjoy the pics

Rule of thumb for snakes. If you don't know what your doing don't go near them. Nice photographs anyway Amateur. Thanks for posting the story as well.

Would love to have your visitors in my yard. Well, maybe not the Myna but the rest are certainly welcome. Love the story that went with the shots and I'm pleased to see that you lived to tell the tale.

Agreed with the rule of thumb for snakes... but there is no need to run away. A snake will only attack you if you attack it first (this includes accidentally standing on it!)

I saw a tiger snake on the weekend. It was sunning itself by my shed when it heard me coming.* It slithered away (which is what they usually do) then I saw it and was standing staring at it. Now, had I left it at that it would have been the end of the story. It would have stayed there and waited until I was gone, or it would have slowly slithered away.

I was in the mood to do some research though. What would happen if I stirred it up a bit? Surely if I threw this piece of wood at it, it would quickly run away? I throw a decent chunk of wood from about 5m away. Instead of leaving, the snake starts coming slowly towards me. I stand my ground. It gets closer. OK, that is enough for me; I turn and leave. It finds somewhere to hide.

Later, I return to the same spot. It is in the sun again, and again goes to hide when I arrive. This time I (pretend to) ignore it completely and it just stays under the thing it crawled under. At one point it sticks its head out. I turn to look at it and it goes back under.

Moral of the story: leave them alone and they will leave you alone. This is a tiger snake, renowned to be quite aggressive; black snakes are even more timid and will do their best to get away from you.

* People say that snakes have bad hearing and eyesight, but they certainly can hear you if you make a bit of noise and they certainly can see you if you're pretty close to them.

My research will continue. (Seriously, the best way to learn about them is to observe them, so I will do that at every opportunity.) I probably won't throw things at them again ... much.

I can add that my local Highlands Copperheads have excellent eye-sight.
I saw a large one, and watched it as I walked past it (crab-wise) heading to the shed to get something. As soon as I turned away, (stopped looking steadily at it) the snake started to move away.
I glanced back (after just a few seconds) and it had disappeared completely.
But it knew from 20 metres away or more, that I had been watching it. As soon as I stopped doing that, it took its chance to hide.
Cheers
Denis
