Mix-ups

Today I found out that the calls I had been hearing don't all belong to the Noisy Friarbird, they belong to the Little Wattlebird. Had I not been outside trying to get a photo for "Bird of the week" I would not have knownsmiley

I was watching the Noisy Friarbird chase the Little Wattlebird when I heard them both call.

The other day I also found out that the call I thought belonged to the Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike actually belongs to the Olive-backed Oriole.

So even though I have been into birds and wildlife since I could walk, you still learn something new every day!!

I have posted the photos....even though they are poorfrown

Cheers, Jackiesmiley

The cuckoo-shrike does sound like the oriole. It's easy to get things confused, I just hope over time my knowledge improves. Sites like BIBY help a lot but there is a lot of variations in calls so they can't cover all the calls you hear.

Some birds like the pallid cuckoo or the white-throated warbler are easy. Others are more of a challenge.

Thanks GregL, I know that BIBY (including forum members!!) has already helped me enormously with ID's and callswink

I will e-mail you about calls.

As GregL said the Olive-backed Oriole and Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike do sound a little similar. I found them a bit confusing at first. Once you get some more experience, they are worlds apart.
