Hi all, as we have large numbers of King Parrots in the trees on our property (the neighbours feed them),the young birds are now big enough to see what sex they are.It is obvious, that the vast majority is "male".What could be the reason for it? I started to notice more males the season after the fires behind us. (it's a fact, that humans produce more male children after wars) Does anybody know, what determines the sex of birds?
I have a few ideas myself, could be what they feed on, high in protein etc, could be affected by climate changes,or because the neighbours feed in abundance? What do you think?

Uhh, I think in biology we learnt about this and they have W and O chromozones or something and the female has WO whilst the males have WW or OO, so the female determines the gender unlike in humans (I can't remember it that well, it was yr 8 :L) Whether it's chance or not I dunno, perhaps some longer term observation would be more useful. It's like flipping a coin, you don't expect to get 50 heads 50 tails every time, so maybe it's chance with the more males this season.

But an interesting thing I heard when watching a Steve Irwin interview a few months ago was when he was talkking about his son, he said that he and Terri really wanted a son (before Bob of course), and he was saying they went to see some expert on it. "Apprently" (speculation of course exists here) the cooler you are "down there" then the more likely you are to produce a boy and a whole lot of other stuff like getting more calcium or protein and stuff like that, it was on Andrew Denton so if you want to look it up and watch it it could be quite interesting. What the real reson is I dunno but I thought I'd add what I can :)
Morning Amateur, 10/10 for the effort. I love your biological theories!!?? LOL. We should not forget to tell the boy birds,-not to wear tight jeans!-
