Tasmanian Native Hens

Another species endemic to Tasmania.

This is one of a large family that live on our property at Huonville, 40klm south of Hobart. Started with two a couple of years ago, now about twenty. These guys are on their second brood this season. Can't get close enough to capture the chickens, but will keep trying.

We call them Turbo Chooks, because they run like they have a turbo charger up their clacker!

Apparently great eating, simply boil in a pot with a large rock, and when the rock is cooked, so is the bird.

Very interesting. Do you get turbo rocks on your property too?

Why do you think there's been an increase in the population, dwatsonbb?

Hi Woko, think the increase is due largely to the fact that we don't have cats, our dogs are inside, and because we allow grass to grow over winter ( will cut hay in December) there is plenty of food. Their young will be big enough to move into our back paddock, before the hay is cut. Need to cut hay, as it is a huge bush fire risk if we just let it grow. Am on a mission to present as many of our endemic birds as possible, but can't get too close (yet) to the little ones.

Just great Dale, we do the same. No cats either, and the dogs are in a run when we go out for longer than they can stay inside.

Great to hear of a bird we wouldn't normally get to see.  I'm must admit, I have to wonder about cooking rocks though.

Great looking bird and i love "turbo chooks" too. Would love to see some shots of their young so i hope you succeed in getting some shots.

Thanks, Dale. That's managing your property for wildlife. Good on you. And not having cats would be a big help, too. I think there are a couple of farmers on the edge of Lake Alexandrina in SA who manage their property to the advantage of Cape Barren Geese. It's great to see.
