Today we went to "the Briars" , a beautiful area with wonderful walks along a creek, situated near Mt Martha on the Mornington Peninsula. (Vic) When I got out of the car, I almost stepped on some eggs, they were very close to the road and the parked cars. At first I had no idea who the owner was, but then I notice a very angry Plover walking up and down the edge of the road. When I had a closer look at the eggs, I noticed that the babies in two of them where pecking their way out of them. We stayed and observed the traffic for some time, the parent returned to sit on the eggs again. We watched some cars come and go, but there was no danger to the nest, so we quietly left. One of the Plovers kept swooping us until we got back to the car. I hope they will make it? Although, when we had lunch at the Restaurant, the owner said they breed in the same spot every year, but after the hatch get eaten by foxes or cats.
Have a close look at the little beak, pecking at the hole to make it big enough to come out.
fantastic photos M-L - it's a pity about the foxes and cats though
