Saw these this morning, when I checked on "my lake"
, near Aldi in Beaconsfield. Melbourne Water now keeps it clean and beautiful.
Aren't the colours on those two simply devine? I love the red eyes.

My first reaction was "oh wow!"
These shots are fantastic M-L,especially the male teal! You captured the sheen on his head perfectly.
Thanks Nathan, I just noticed something I hadn't before, if you have a close look at the head of the female, there is a green sheen on the feathers too.
(BTW, the photos only had a tiny crop, but no other work done to them)

Yes there is, Araminta! Well spotted. There's no mention of this in Morcombe or Pizzey, at least not in the editions I have. It's highly unlikely these are juvenile males, I suppose?

I know.... for some reason I did not see any young in the two years I have watched them. There are at least three pairs that seem close (enough
), but no babies. Why would that be? I think they might have had some, but living close to civilization (if that's what you can call it?),the young were probabely sacrificed to the" God of so called progress"
? Or the local cats?

I believe that chestnut teal prefer brackish or salt water such as found on tidal mudflats & in estuaries. (See Morcombe.) Your lake, being of fresh water persuasion, might not be conducive to breeding, Araminta. Or perhaps they've bred & the adults have dispersed to some fresh water locations.
Congratulations to you & Melbourne Water for this lake being kept clean.
