Magpie Geese

Alright I know they are common, but the light was nice. Usually I see them in a black rubbish bag, even dirtier than this one, being taken in the pod of the aircraft for the Yolngu to eat that night.

I read this a few times, it'd have to be the heat, but I don't get it. (the meaning of what you are saying) Please explain.......

They are valuable food for the Yolngu - the local indigenous group of tribes in Arnhem Land. I am a pilot, so they throw dead magpie geese into black plastic bags, then the bags into the carry pod under the aircraft to take home to eat or give to relatives to eat. There is no way they are allowed to take them into the cabin as they stink. The roads are washed out 6 months of the year, so mostly they fly everywhere

Sorry for the shorthand previously - sometimes I just assume people know about what goes on in the Northern Territory

Amazing birds, Neville -I've never seen one before.

You're right - it's always interesting that locals in any area assume the whole world  knows what happens in their own "neck of the woods".

I find myself doing the exact same thing when talking about happenings in my little bit of SE Qld to the rellies "down" in good old SA.

Australia is such an amazing place, and so diverse.

Thanks for sharing your great photo and giving us all an insight into life in NT,

Cheers

Chris

Love that story Neville.there is no question, they'd be good to eat.

I tell you a funny story involving a chicken. A few weeks back I was sitting on a bus, at the next stop waited an Asian woman, she must have been to the market. There was a live chicken under her arm. The driver opened the door and said to the woman: you are not getting on the bus with a live chicken. She didn't hesitate for one second, twisted the chicken's neck, declared.... dead now.....,

and got on the bus. Not one person on the bus said anything, there was a strange silence.

(this is a true story)

20 years ago had Magpie goose at a BBQ. Was greasy. The strippers were good though.
