I've just been camping at Honeysuckle Creek near Tharwa, south of Canberra. Last night I heard a deep loud growling, aspirated like someone with bronchitis, coming from a tree behind the tent. There was an answering call from at least 100 m away. It was quite spooky. It wasn't the gang-gang cockatoos (or the wallabies), but I can't figure out what it was. Any clues?
might have been a brushtail possum.
Thanks. Sounds right after looking at videos. Would explain why it was in a tree. Given how common they are I'm surprised I haven't heard one before.
