Was out at Murrumba Downs (John Oxley Reserve specifically) north of Brisbane today, and I found a few more birds than I bargained for. Two little birdies I couldn't quite get my head around though.
It's kind of a mix of dry forest and mangrovey area.
Any bright ideas?
I dont know the first one but the second is a Varied Triller.
Thanks Tim. :)
I now think the first might be a female Scarlet Honeyeater.
I agree. LJ
Yes, Female Scarlet Honeyeater and as Tim said Varied Triller.
did you see the reported Owlet-Nightjar?
Peter
I went there specifically to try and see the White-throated Nightjar. (Which is what I assume you're referring to) And yes, I did see it. :)
There is an owlet-nightjar at Osprey House, but haven't managed to be there at the right time for him.
Yep, I agree with both IDs - the tinge of red on the head and the curved bill identify the female scarlet honeyeater and the varied triller is pretty distinctive once you've seen one (The white-winged triller is quite similar, but does not have the buff-coloured underparts).
Cheers
Tim
