A bit of a long shot.

I know that this is a bit of a long shot, in more ways than one, considering that the photo was taken from quite a distance, but would this be an Australian Owlet-nightjar? I know it is a very bad photo.

It was taken in near Narooma NSW.

I'd say so, Donna. The thin black line on the forehead, large eyes & the behaviour of sitting in the hole of the tree are both indicative.

A good shot & illustrative of why we need to conserve old trees.

Absolutely. I've been birding since the mid-80s and NEVER seen an AON in its nest hollow! Well done. Lorne

Thank you all very much for the confirmation. I am very excited that it is AON, a new lifer for me. Woko I completely agree about conserving old trees. Wonderful habit for animals.
