Hi everyone - think it is time for another alphabet challenge don't you? The rules are simple:
- Each new photo has to be of a bird whose either 1. full current common name (e.g. A for Australian Magpie) or 2. current scientific name, starts with that letter, working our way through the alphabet from A to Z.
- If a bird is used for a full common name, it cannot be used again for either a common name or scientific name (so we might need to think about what is coming up around difficult letters like X and Z). Likewise, if a scientific name is used, the same species cannot be used for a common name.
- For help, check out the bird list on BIBY for an alphabetical list of about 400 bird species with full common name and scientific names.
- If we get all the way through to Z we will start over again at A.
- Remember it is the first letter of the full name of the bird, so you might need to double check some before you post! e.g. Australian Magpie is for A NOT M, Laughing Kookaburra is for L, not K etc...
- You must wait for 2 other posters/photos before your next turn.
Who is ready to kick us off with A?

Morning all! No Q's ?
Samford Valley Qld.
Annie - I am almost upset that you only want me for my Kelp Gull
Holly - I cannot find a Q bird either common or scientific name, however I have many pics taken in Queensland.
Peter
You are right - i can't find anything either - except Quarrion but that is the old name.
OK for Q we can have - either a Quarrion (cockatiel) or one of the Quails (not button-quails though)...
I have a Quarrion but i need to wait for 2 more posts
I am sure someone has a Quail though

Aww, and the rest of your shots Peter of course - especially your Terek Sandpiper (Xenus cinereus), hehehe! Lucky I know you'd know I'm only joking .
Holly, I am jumping the gun I know, but I think in the last alphabet challenge, we all got stuck on "U" as well?
West Coast Tasmania
Um, I think there are no 'Q' birds?
Looking in my Pizzey guide, there are no bird genuses starting with 'Q' and all the common names are quails or quail-thrushes, but each lists a more specific common name (eg. "brown quail", "cinnamon quail-thrush", etc). It's an old guide, but if names are still current then we might have to go offshore to find a 'Q' bird?
Not sure if you are allowed pet birds but this should solve Q !
Kerry - Perth, Western Australia.
Woohoo, you saved the day shoop! She is gorgeous! Wild/rehab/captive/pet, I don't think it matters. Good job!

Struthio camelus (Ostrich). Listed as a feral species in my field guide, although this particular one is a captive. Would love to see one in it's natural habitat one day, I think they're beautiful looking birds.

You are right - no birds in Australia starting with U (common name or scientific). Unless someone has an overseas bird (????) we can skip straight over U...
Tufted Titmouse - sorry not the best pic
Peter
No need to skip U, I discovered the scientific name for one I had.
A very pretty bird, this one from India.

Yes I think we can use the same birds again - especially if we get stuck on some of those tricky ones.
Elsie - Annie is right, there is a Willie Wagtail already at R. Do you have something else that can substitute?
Disregarding the second Elanus axillarus as per instructions and introducing an Eopsaltria australis.
