sacred kingfishers

lucky enough to be granted access to this pair of kingfishers nesting, they are about 3 weeks along and have 3 juveniles in the hole- leading to a constant supply of food deliveries.

sadly storm clouds were forming and very grey skies with little light, flight shots without fill flash were near impossible and i only had bare lens, i also really dont like using flash with them as it turns their beautiful blue fluorescent.

however i shall be back with remote triggers and a shorter lens to see if i can get the shots im after.

they have nested in the same spot the last 7 years and pack the hole each year with mud after chicks have flown.

a few shots anyway :

Great results in those conditions .... better than I manage in perfect light!

Interesting to learn they put mud in the hole after nesting ... do they seal it up completely?

Bueatiful photos .... thanks for posting.

Some great photographs and as WD said, it's interesting to read about them filling the nest hole. I wasn't aware of that.

I have also found a pair of Kingfishers nesting in an ants/termite nest near home. They are very suspicious of me and will fly off in the opposite direction rather than visit the nest if they think I am watching them.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your next set of photographs using the remote trigger, sounds like a great idea.

thanks everyone-

ive not seen them do it but they have nested (or ofspring nested) in one of 2 trees for past 7 years, the owners of the garden say they fill it up completely each year before they leave and dig it out again the following year- they showed me the other tree where they nested the year before and still has alot of dry mud packed in the hole- its high up well out of human reach- unlike this year!

ive only got 2 weeks till im flying out for christmas and will probably only have a day or two to go back- judging by the size of the baby birds they may be out by the time i return- we shall see

thanks,

mike
