There were about eight of these birds in a flock moving about the spot this morning.Taken in SE Queensland.
They have Finch like beaks but can't be sure what they are. Did consider Nutmeg Mannikins?

Nutmeg and Chestnut-breasted often associate with each other and juveniles are very similar. I think these are Chestnut-breasted becuse the bill isn't dark enough. Didn't you see any adults?
Thanks Owl. This is another photograph from yesterday but the bird had its face in a shadow. Looking at my field guide both the Nutmeg and Chestnut Mannikins look similar when they are young.
