It never ceases to amaze me where these birds turn up. From Cape York to the local golf course.
This pair have decided to take up a spot just off the highway on Mount Glorious road.
Sometime they just remain really still and other times they stand up and walk away.
You've taken some good photos of one of the birds I like a lot. They make great photo oportunities. Good to practice settings as they can stand motionless for a long time. Also love their eyes, because they are so big, you get some great reflections

Great stuff Reflex. You are getting a lot of great photos and I really enjoy seeing them. Photo #3 is a fantastic portrait.
That bird is nicely camouflaged in that leaf litter its sitting in.
Ha Reflex I took some photos of the exact same birds the other day.
I see what you mean about the eyes, so big and beautiful.
The second shot they were trying to hide from me and this one was checking to see I didn't get any closer.
You can see why there are sometimes called thick Knees.
Cheers
Devster
great eyes!- for spotting them and in the photos themselves,
thanks for sharing

I see them every morning on my way to work now.
Crazy birds, they think they are camouflaged and no-one can see them, little do they know that their photographs are on the internet!

Stopped in on these Curlews again yesterday almost two months later.
Mum is still sitting on her egg (just the one) and remains absolutely motionless, relying on her plumage to conceal her. She looks to have lost some weight since I last called in. Seems to be a long incubation period?
If you didn't know she was there she would be hard to spot actually.
Dad is quite aggresive now if you get a bit too close to Mum and if you take any notice of his hissing he will continue to move towards you crouched down with his wings out trying to make himself appear as big as possible.

What incredibly interesting birds!
Thanks for all the photos!
Lovely seeing birds in their various life cycles.
Happy Birding!

Ah thats a shame, there were 2 eggs at one stage.
Below is what happened when I got too close to them last week.
Its like she is saying "There's nothing to see here, please disperse"
Useless information #227 - the visible joint on the stone-curlew leg is actually the ankle

I went past again this afternoon and mum is still sat there on the same spot. It's 42.8C here at the moment she must be cooking that egg. In fact I doubt it is fertile now or this is a second attempt.

Actually I checked her today & she is still sitting on one egg.
Not sure how long the incubation period is.
I hope it hatches.
In addition to keeping eggs warm, they can also insulate against the Heat. She will be holding that egg at her body temperature. Hopefully something good will happen.

Lovely looking bird and great photos. Thanks for sharing.
Male and female have gone as of 07:00 this morning.
I checked the spot where the female was sitting and no trace of the egg (or egg shell pieces) or any signs of a struggle (loose feathers) so hopefully nothing untoward has happened. They could have at least left a note or something?

Yeah I went down this morning and had a good look around but nothing to be found
Tis very sad and my boys will be sad also.
I hope the chick just hatched and they found a safer place to hide, but as Reflex said, not even any evidence of egg shells, so unlikely.
Oh well, thats nature.
I wonder if they will try again in a different spot this year or if its too late.
oh Devster, these are the prettiest photos of BSc I've seen... Those eyes!!! I wonder if you'd allow me to use the lovely legs pic for the Curlew Crier?, a newsletter I'm putting together for our Friends of the Bush Stone-curlew group...I would acknowledge you of course and will send you a copy if you like? On the Central Coast of NSW we have only about 17 BScs!! We monitor them closely.
