Talk Back Gardening

This morning (it's still Saturday in SA. Just) James Smith, University of SA zoologist, was a guest on Talk Back Gardening on ABC 891. He & presenter John Lamb discussed how to attract birds to your garden.

It was encouraging that the switchboard was crammed with callers. Not so encouraging was that most of the callers who got a guernsey on the show had comments or questions about how to get rid of or control birds in their gardens. Going against this trend was the person who sent a text message to say he/she actually encourages Black Birds!

One of the callers wanted to know how to get rid of Noisy Miners, a perennial problem on Birds in Backyards. James Smith encouraged people to plant shrubs to provide protection for the smaller birds & John Lamb commented that open treed areas are preferred habitat for Noisy Miners.

On the whole it occurred to me again that we still have a long way to go to establish a culture where people take pride in our native flora & fauna & want to recreate habitats for birds & other wildlife. So keep at it, folks.

Opinions certainly vary, Woko. I recall talking to a former neighbour who loved Common Mynas and thought they were great characters full of personality and fed them daily and put nesting boxes up for them...
