New Visitors Spotted Dove.

New Visitors to the 'Iron Tree'.

Spotted Dove only 'spotted' one bird and only seen for a few days. Not considered 'native' to rural areas so could it be an escapee or just passing through?

Possible range expansion.

They are established in many rural towns.

What areas?

This species puts in an occasional appearance at my place on the s.e. slopes of the Mt Lofty Ranges SA. It's well established nearby so I'll be keeping an eye open for any nests. I strongly suspect that if it becomes established on my place it'll make it that much harder for Peaceful Doves & perhaps even Bronzewings to become part of the birdlife here.

Heaps of 'em around down here in Sydney. Even though they are an introduced species I would be sad if I never saw another.

From what I've seen they are generally uncommon in rural regional areas and usually found in greatest abundance in cities and towns.

I've read this species has been implicated in the decline of some native doves, and though I don't doubt it plays a role I suspect at least in urban areas blame falls more squarely on the actions of humans destroying native vegetation required by native doves, and replacing it with expanses of suburbia featuring nearly sterile exotic gardens more suited to the much more adaptable Spotted Doves. Perhaps the Spotteds moved in as the natives moved out. The large Spotted Dove population on the urban fringe might make any future native dove re-establishment difficult.
