Often around the end of the breeding season, some of the local magpies can look pretty tatty. Like it's all been too much like hard work and they need a visit to the hairdressers and a good lie down and snooze.

And some of them can do a very good impression of a dead bird. Anybody know why they lie on the ground like that? I've seen suggestions that it encourages ants to do a bit of housekeeping among the feathers (bug removal??) and others who say they're just sunbaking.

After a few minutes this bird stood up again, shook itself and flew off.

I can relate to pear shaped weeks lately Holly , hope all is going more smoothly for you now!

WD those finches are just super cute all snuggled like that! Lol Shorty, that's how I must have looked earlier in the week nodding off while sitting at the computer - did it fall over? Haha.

Those Plumed W-d's sure have the most amazing plumage alright, so very pretty, you're so lucky to have them where you are M-L. Shorty, I am green, you discover the most amazing variety and number of Owls etc and Raptors! Just look at those gorgeously huge eyelids!

This little guy I captured has a bit of a story.

The shortish version ,I was sitting on a log railing spying on him and Ms Wren snuggled on a branch a distance away. He spied me and left Ms Wren to land on another log railing further in front of me. He looked to the left then right, did a double take at me, looked back to his front, then out of the blue he bolted to his right straight towards me at full speed.

He stopped at the end of his piece of railing, sat down and studied me for a few seconds, stood up and proudly sang. Then, as if his legs had disappeared from beneath him, fell abruptly onto his left side with wing out, put his head down, tucked his left wing back in slightly and had a nana nap for around 5-10 seconds!

I have about 18 shots that I kept showing the event - sadly I ballsed up over half of them , they're either oof or blown out, but I kept them anyway as it was such weird behaviour, to me anyway, it may be common and I have just never seen it before. This is the last shot in the sequence as when he "fell" down, it was so sudden and unexpected I was convinced that he had actually dropped dead so got up to check on him, fooled me, haha.
