How interesting, zosterops. Rotorua's role as a nursery has real merit, given the number of species that are on the brink of extinction. If this role can be combined with habitat restoration in other areas there may be hope for wildlife preservation.
Also, given the interdependence between so many factors in an environment, it will be fascinating to see how the many plant & animal species survive on Rotorua in the long term.
Despite having a higher total of extinct bird species, the Kiwis have done a lot more to save their remaining threatened species than we have (see Black Robin, Chatham Island Pigeon, Kakapo) in fact our current govt could do with some tutoring
It will also be indeed interesting to see how these species interact on the island given some are from disparate parts of NZ and have not encountered one another under natural circumstances.
Zosterops, you assume the current government would benefit from tutoring. Frankly, I seriously doubt its capacity in this regard. And in case anyone thinks I'm politically biased, it seems the new Queensland government is of a similar ilk given what I've been told today is its current proposal for destruction of the Great Barrier Reef at Abbott's Point.
