Osprey

Osprey on Port Macquarie's northern breakwall. One of a local resident pair. Taken on a point and shoot camera, not the best image quality but a special moment for me seeing one of these beauties up so close.

Nice, that's not bad for a point and shoot. I have some Cannon D something with a 200 zoom and I'd be lucky to get anything remotely as good. I think they mate for life so I'm happy for you there is a pair in the neighbourhood.

I'm probably mean and no doubt some will think its the wrong thing to do. But when I do go for the occasional beach fish, and all that is on offer are smallish Dart, and if their is a rapter hanging around because they know what they want. I wait untill its air born and having a snoop around, then sometimes lob a fish into the air. The bird swoops and grabs it mid flight, sometimes dramatically changing agngle or elivationn just before contact. Sometimes having to turn and dive, or flop around a bit to get it. Such an amazing spectical to observe, even it its set up.

I don't see anything wrong with throwing them a freshly caught fish, might even try it myself next time i'm fishing. They are apparently very efficient at catching their own fish, something like 70% success rate, I couldn't imagine them ever becoming dependent on humans for food.

I found their nest today, high in a Norfolk Pine tree in the middle of town, so i will keep an eye on it and hopefully get some more shots soon.
