Redbanks Conservation Park

Got a chance for a couple of Hours in Redbanks CP 15klms out of Burra ,SA.

More driving time than birding time but had heard a lot about it and was keen for a look.

Great place with a mixture of woodland and more open shrubby stuff(technical term :-) )

Good range of birds in a small area including Southern Whiteface, Redthroat, Horsfield's and Black-eared cuckoo plus a nice group of breeding Black Kite and a couple of Kestrels.

A foraging group of four Echidnas really topped off the afternoon.

Bit photo heavy but I haven't been out much lately :-)

Awesome photos Rick. I like all of them but I especially like the kestrel and the whiteface. The echidna is cool too!

That would be five ticks for me including the Echidna. There does seem to plenty of Cuckoo's about at the moment.

That Black Kite photo is awesome, with the eyes horizontal and looking at us, and the wings angled. I can almost guess what it feels like to be prey.

Great range of birds, especially love the black kite shot. Amazing position. Was it down low or were you high up for it. Or maybe it was diving down on you??

Thanks all,

HelloBirdy, Redbanks has an inticate network of steep side gullys, carved ou by erosion, that provide lots of high vantage points for these types of shots. Really is a spectacular place not so far from home.

First time there and the light was lousy,(cloud) looking to go back with a setting sun and have another go.

Cheers

Lovely set of photos, Rick. Redbanks holds lots of nostalgia for me as I used to visit there with extended family when I was a child. Unfortunately, I hadn't developed my interest in birds & the environment at that time.

In the 1970s the SA government of the day permitted a dirt bike group to use Redbanks as a playground. Immense erosion was caused to this stunning place. Rick, were there any signs of dirt bikes using the area?

Hi Woko, not that I could see. Was my first visit so only really saw the campsite and day visit areas in the time I had.

Will be going back for a more extensive look. Erosion is pretty full on though.

Another great collection of photos Rick. You keep finding great spots for bird photography.

I cannot see anything but a harpy or goblin like face on the black kite! - the tail feather being the pointy ear on the left.
