Need some help confirming/correcting these ids of shorebirds seen at Stockton Sandspit Newcastle NSW. My ids are species named on the various signage around the location, so they have at least been sighted there in the past!
#1 Red necked stint ?
2. Two Curlew Sandpipers?
3. Red Knot?
In the last pic above - im asking about one towards the right center of the photo - it looks quite a hefty specimen compared to the others.
Thanks for any help.
Not too good with shore birds but I will try to help. 1: Sanderling, 2: I think curlew sandpipers are good. But that's all I really know, I will let more experienced people deal with then :)
Tegan - Melbourne Vic.
#1 is a Red-necked Stint (Stints have hind toes, Sanderlings don't, & plumage is wrong for Sanderling)
#2 Curlew Sandpipers
#3 Red Knot
#4 Red Knot, Curlew Sandpipers, Bar-tailed Godwit & some Sharp-tailed Sandpipers(with rufous crowns)
#5 the bird just right of centre is a Great Knot (compared to adjacent Red knot it is slightly bigger & has slightly longer bill)
Thanks for the help SteveM and Tegan.
Thanks SteveM for the Great Knot id - i thought it looked a bit larger. Gives me 5 new shorebird species from that spot that day.
