Black Kite

A Black Kite at the Healesville Sanctuary, roaring into the blue to catch a piece of meet thrown into the air. It catches it with its feet and transfers it to its beak in the air.

I think they throw cut up things into the air.

Yes, I think they are small chunks of meat.
However, they use dead mice for the owl and some of the larger raptors.

Yum!!!!!!!

Brilliant series of photographs. I'll add Healesville Sanctuary on to my (growing by the day ) wish list of places to visit. I can't see any "jesses" on the Black Kite so I assume that is actually a wild bird catching the pieces of meat.

Hi Reflex,

No, it's actually a captive bird but they are obviously very confident that it will come back after each show as there are no jesses or radio locating arial. The larger birds in their demonstration (like the Wedgetail) do have them.
