Bird of the Week Challenge - 5th October: holiday birding

Hi guys, apologies for being a bit late today. Have been battling holiday traffic on today's public holiday.

i spent a few days at Jervis Bay and did a bit of birding. Thought this week it would be good to share bird photos from when you have been on holidays. International, interstate or (like me) just a couple of hours from home. Even better if you have a story behind the photo to share.

Australian White Ibis, taken Balina NSW 2014, one of my favourite coastal towns. Apparently we have these in Tasmania, but I have never seen one here. My brother used to live at Lismore, and so a few sunny days by the seaside were very refreshing.

Spotted this bird on my brother-in-law’s farm in Borneo earlier this year. A pair of Chestnut-breasted Malkoha had built their nest in one of the pepper vines and this male bird (judging by his pale blue iris) was bringing food to the chicks. The Chestnut-breasted Malkoha is a species of cuckoo which builds its nest and raises its own young.

I love that photo,ungb...never seen a bird like the Chestnut-breasted Malkoha before. It has such pretty, blue eyes.

good fortune #1 - in Oct '11 a direct report won a national award that included a return trip to an international conference and study tour in the USA; it was for 2 to inlcude his manager - me

good fortune #2 - Alan Joyce grounded the Qantas fleet in Oct '11 when we were in LA ready for the return flight; we got 2 days all paid in a Marriott Hotel in Irvine County, LA

good fortune #3 - the hotel was a short walk to the San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary (http://www.irwd.com/san-joaquin-marsh/san-joaquin-marsh) and a taxi drive to Newport Beach

I found this Allen's Hummingbird in the Hotel grounds

Nice photos and good stories. Well as luck would have it, my brother moved from Lismore to Etty Bay, just south of Innisfail in FNQ. Etty Bay is well know for it's friendly Southern Cassowary. I know I have posted this before, but it fits the challenge. Keep em coming.

Went for a weekend away up at the Bunya Mountains and did a photography course with Michael Snedic. I just bought my Canon 70D and Tamron 150-600mm lens. After a morning of learning about settings etc we went out to practice what we had just been taught. I took this photo of a Rose Robin. I entered this photo in the Pine Rivers Show and it won 1st place under birds and wildlife and got Reserve Champion overall. I didn't think that was a bad effort seeing as I only just learnt what settings to use.

That rose robin picture is beautiful,Devster...definitely a winning shot!

There is not much of a story behind this photo, it is just a photo of a Grey Teal I took during a holiday I was on. I had also recently bought a Tamron 150-600 and I was testing it out.

Thanks TBL. Yes Peter that is a beautiful shot.

This Australasian or "Richards" Pipit (as it was formally known), was taken while I was on holidays up at Hervey Bay. While up there I contacted the local bird watching group and one of the main organisers of the group took me on a personal tour to some of the properties that they regularly visit up there. This one place was just full of waders and other water birds, it was a Birders Paradise. I think I ended up with about 10 ticks for that trip.

My apologies if I have posted these before. They are from Vancouver last year.

My last trip away was to Lake Cargelligo about 6 weeks ago. The birds are always awesome there and are many and varied. Not my favourite spot i have been to but it is up there.

Love the pictures. My picture is not so amazing but I did travel to Kakadu for it. If you examine where all the birds are looking you should see the reason... there was a crocodile in the billabong with them! Sue

My last outing was only for a few hours last Saturday morning at Mount Glorious but I did come across quite a few species and nearly managed a good shot of a Rufous Fantail.

I did get this Yellow-throated Scrub-wren after setting myself up so that if it landed where I hoped it would, I would be able to capture it at eye-level.

My husband took those photos of a Golden-headed Cisticola. It was our last weekend together at the Treatment Plant.

(He died 4 days later. He was a good photographer, but never wanted to show his photos to anyone. Sorry mate, I'm doing it now)

I spent a couple of days working down at Kingscliff a few weeks ago.  One afternoon I came across a flock of these Little Corella's who were in a very mischievous mood.

Thank you. There are so many interesting birds, and easy to photograph.

Some more predominantly ground birds.

I am down at Nowra for the Bathurst weekend at a mates place ( a yearly event for us ). He has a nice block of land with heaps of birds and not 5 minutes here a Channel billed Cuckoo landed in a tree not far from us. Not really down here for the birding but had to take some shots.
