I haven't been uploading photos (or any of my better ones) for fear of the fact that anything that gets put up is available for anyone to use however they wish forever, often without asking or any acknowledgement. What are others' thought on this issue?
I work on the basis that my pics are better than some and not as good as some others
however I still compress my pics to less than 500kb before I upload them

Well I personally think that the photos we post may be used but only for learning material. If someone wants to use the photo in another way they should ask permission to use it or acknowledge the person who posted it.

Yes, this comes up now and again.
Firstly, if you take the photo you own the copyright and no one can use it without your permission or they are breaking the law, but people will be people and some will steal your image. As for watermarks, to me they are a waste of time and degrade the photo. Watermarks are easy to remove for those that want to.
I use FlickR to link my pics, it offers lossless quality but if someone saves a pic on this (or any) site they get a very low resolution copy.
You can check if someone has used your photo without permission by right clicking on the pic where you posted it and select, Search Google for this image.
Photos will be stolen from time to time and there is little we can do about it but i would rather share my pics than leave them in a dark corner on my hard drive.
I must say though that i guess i have been lucky in that the majority of my pics used by others, i have been asked first.

My husband is a keen amateur photographer. We have a blog and he has a Facebook page where he posts a random daily photo as well as posting photos to the Facebook page of the "retirement resort" (their words) where we live and a personal page of "life" at said village. Viewers of his photos have suggested that he should watermark his photos. He has no interest in doing this. Generally speaking our blog photos (his and mine) are snapshots of where we travel and therefore not necessarily great quality. However his daily photos are generally of fairly high quality. For him, it is a hobby. For me, our blog is a record of our travels.

I must say I like shorty's attitude, and I will agree that it would be great to know that my photos brought a smile to someone's face, rather than hiding them in my hard drive for no one to see. I know I absolutely love looking at the photos of other members. Thanks all for the motivation and tips, and you should expect to see some photos from me when I get the time!!

That's interesting I didn't know about that option. I have just tried it on one of my images on FlickR but I didn't get that option.
Is there something else I need to do?

i dont make money off my photos, i like sharing them and hoping people enjoy them as i do. I used to be protective of them but now ive come round to just letting people enjoy them.
i dont tend to put requests or copywrite postings/ water marks as this forum is fairly small and the community of users very respectful. if i were posting a collection of good quality photos elsewhere id think about asking for permission prior to using my images.

I agree that the (active) members of this forum are respectful, and I'm not overly concerned about them. In case you weren't aware, photos on this forum show up in google images results, which is where I'd expect most, if any, unauthorised use of photos may take place.

You need to do it on a picture you have posted, like on here.

True - i hadn't actually considered that.
ahh well, probably not too bothered, interesting to track your images though, i wonder if its incoding in the photo file, or if someone downloads the image runs it through photoshop and re- uploads it would it track it .
mike
