Hello from the Fraser Coast, Qld.

Good morning. My husband and I are relatively new to bird watching. We travel extensively each year, mostly by caravan, around Australia and have just completed 6 months on the road. We enjoy photographing and identifying the bird life we see on our travels and would like to improve our knowledge of Australian birds.

We would enjoy joining a birding group local to the Fraser Coast where we live if anyone can give us details of such a group.

Welcome to the forum. There are plenty of knowledgeable people on the forum to help you out. I'm looking forward to hearing more on the birds you see on your travels

Welcome! Your traveling sounds like so much fun, and what a great opportunity to do some birdwatching! I'm originally from the faser coast however i'm not living htere now, hopefully someone else will know about a birding group for you :)

Thanks Elsie. Our travels around Australia have led to our interest in birds as there is not a lot else to do when out in the middle of nowhere! A birding friend has given me details of Birdlovers of Hervey Bay which seems to be the only group in the area. I will contact them and set my alarm for 6am Wednesdays.

Thanks for that link Peter. It looks an interesting group particularly as they do camping outings.

thanks for the link to your blog

the link went to your recent trip to NQ and brought back some great memories for me of Normanton, Burketown, Karumba, Crioydon and Georgetown - I was there for 6 months from mid-1986

I note that you are 'relatively new to birdwatching' and that you travel extensively, I therefore suggest that you should have 2 important birding books - a field guide and a 'where to find birds in Australia' book; there are a number of field guides and each has benefits, the most recently published is Pizzey & Knight; there are lesser 'where to find books', the most recently published is by Dolby & Clarke

when I arrive in a new city/town I usually look for the tourist information centre and ask if they have a birding brochure as this will also direct you to the local spots

happy birding

Peter

Thanks Peter. Although fairly new to birding, we have got the Pizzey & Knight book and also the IPad app and the Michael Morcombe app. The P&K app is excellent.

Great tip about the Info Centres. Hadn't thought of them for birding info. When in Yungaburra I got a mud map for platypus spotting in the creek and was rewarded with our first platypus sighting in the wild. Very exciting!

I still have to finish the last 5 weeks or so of our trip on the blog. Just waiting on a new laptop as the old one has turned up its toes. At the end of our almost 6 months on the road, we spent 4 weeks on the Atherton Tableland which was just magic.
