I was lucky enough to observe this in my local park. They were not worried by me watching. They were on a little island in the middle of the lake. She was busy building a nest, when he was just swimming by, she quickly stopped working, landed next to him as if she was saying: hey, you look nice, how about it?
After the deed was done, he kept on swimming his way, ans she kept on building the nest. Hmm?
Nice work capturing the action! Good to see you posting :)

Looks like he is trying to drown her in #3 & #4. I watched two Pacific Black Ducks mating the other day and the female was well and truly underwater.

She was probably still working on gathering materials thinking, would just finish already.
HaHa Devster, all she was thinking was: wow, that guy looks cute, better grab "it" while I can. She actually stopped the nest building for it.....and went back to work quickly after ...

I've had two people express horror to me about the "drowning" of female Pacific Black Ducks (if I remember rightly) by males during spring. The "drowing" is part of the ritual, I would think. Relax everybody.
Woko there is actually a female under this Drake believe it or not. No wonder the male has to chase them.

Submerging rather than subterfuge by the look of it.
