I had to fly to Canberra this mornig for a meeting (a very early start for me); Shorty was good enough to pick me up after the meeting and guide me to the Collared Sparrowhawk woods; we had just arrived when we heard the call but then it took a while to find the birds
this was my #590 Australian species
this new tick means that I have guided Shorty to 6 more ticks than he has for me (I got in first)
i'm surprised you hadn't seen this species before...
yes, I have just been listing since Oct '10 and my critetia for ticking is higher than some, I need an identifiable pic
I also saw Grey Falcon before Peregrine Falcon
I have a birding pal who is 600+ and has not ticked Striated Thornbill

Lets put that in perspective shall we.
You guided me when i had a bird count of about 40 and i have been guiding you to some very good ticks with you having a bird count of over 500 :))

Wow! #590 Australian species and I'm with you I need an identifiable pic to make a tick although I haven't had Rawshorty pointing out all the birds for me...Yet.
Tell me, Carpentaria Silver eye and mainland Silver eye..are these two different species because I have just found some Silver eye breeding on my property and they are tiny (half the size) compared to the Silvereye I saw on Heron Island?

Hello Reflex - I will answer your question with a story
in Feb '12 I went to Lady Musgrave Is and amongst the many birds I saw a number of Silvereyes but did not take a pic as I had many pics of Silvereyes; on looking at my pics and field guide later I realised that I had missed pics of the capricorn ssp and therein started my quest to also get pic of ssp
I will check Simpson & Day tonight to verify that the capricorn ssp is also present on Heron Is (a fairly safe presumption); I need to check buy my old memory says that they are both in the Capricorn-Bunker group of islands
and what is this - haven't had Shorty pointing out all the birds for me
Peter
Thanks Peter. A photograph of one of the birds from yesterday (huge crop so quality has suffered).

S&D says - Race chlorocephalus (C) 'Capricorn Silvereye' Large, sedentary island race; yellow-green head, pale grey to cream below. I would be uncertain that they are twice the size of race cornwali that we should see in SEQ; (but then I have no photos of the Capricorn Silvereye and therefore have not ticked this ssp; did I mention that earlier?); they cite 8 Silvereye races; the other race that I have not ticked is race ochrochrous (King Island)

Thanks Peter. That's pretty much what Pizzey &Knight said. At this stage I might just continue without identyfying sub-species. Appreciate your help though and I was exaggerating when I said twice the size.
