Hi all!
I have been collecting feathers from around Australia for years and I think its time I find out who they came from :)
I have Rainbow lorikeets and eastern rosellas so far but the brown one, the big white and black one and the smller grey ones with the white/cream splotches are leaving me stumped.
All help appreciated x

Feather Identification
I have one just like the blue/black one, do you know what is is? I have no idea
Tegan - Melbourne Vic.
Brown one in the 3rd photo looks like it could be from a Kookaburra.
The black, white with a tinge of blue could be Pale Headed Rosellas.
The big white one (with a bit of black) looks like it's from a big bird - maybe Pelican?
Dave, Sydney.
I doubt the black/white and blue one is that from a pale headed rosella, where I found mine, it was far out of range for a PHR, I really don't know, but I definitely agree with the Kookaburra and possibly pelican feathers
Tegan - Melbourne Vic.
I would say that the big black and white feather is from a Sacred Ibis (white ibis). I'm unsure of the brown feather and the spotted one though. and I agree with the blue feather being a Pale-headed Rosella's, I have sevaral in my own feather collection :) Actually, I have several feathers just like your spotted one and they have had me stumped! It would be really interesting to know what they're from.
I had a photo of a similar feather which was IDed as a Australian White Ibis.

Oh yes, white one with a bit of black does look like an Ibis feather!
Dave, Sydney.
The smaller brown/grey ones with spots looks like they're from an owl! Maybe a Boobook Owl or even a smaller feather from a Powerful Oawl?
Dave, Sydney.
it always helps with any ID, even feathers, if you say where the pic was taken or the feather found, as location can exclude many birds
the green-yellow-purple feather might be Wompoo Fruit-Dove but I can't think where on the bird the 3 colours are on 1 feather
Tegan, can you post a pic of your feather so that we can comment on the similarity to the black-white-blue feather displayed
Peter
Big black and white one (top) is from a White Ibis' tail (I have one of their feathers too).
I agree with pacman location means so much for identification. its good to make a diary.
P1. I agree white ibis
P2. f1&f3 either pale headed or eastern rosella - I have many of this feather from both birds and they are almost identical. f2 (same bird as P3 f4). f4 musk lorikeet
P3. f1 I'm not sure, someone mentioned owl, S. boobook or powerful - I would add masked owl to that mix. f2 again musk lorikeet. f3 again pale headed or eastern rosella. f4 no idea! if i had to guess and given the feather size and shape maybe a treecreeper species - location would help greatly here?
