Identify this noise?

Hi,

I have heard this creature around my house lately, usually fairly high up in the trees.  It seems to only happen after dark, so it might not even be a bird; perhaps a marsupial of some kind?  Any ideas!?

This is in Olinda, Vic.

Or an insect, soakes?

It's possible.  The recording isn't very good; it sounds like a more substantial sound when I hear it.

I have recently heard young boobooks making similar calls.

Could it be some type of cricket? I have also heard boobooks make a similar sound but more drawn out.

On action replay at higher volume the sound is somewhat reminiscent of young Southern Boobooks although, as Timothy says, the young Southern Boobook call is more drawn out.

Thanks, those who guessed boobooks are right.  These are baby boobooks!  I managed to see one tonight.  I can hear at least 3 of them about the place.  I never would have guessed this unless I saw one as they sound so different from the normal sound that boobooks make.

This evening I saw 3 young boobooks fly into my yard and land in the trees.  Then they all started making this trill call.  I guess their parents must be about somewhere finding food for them :-)
