Darwin Day #1

Spent three days in Darwin over Easter and what a great birding time it was. First day was spent in Darwin itself, Botanic Gardens, East Point and mangrove boardwalk and that was about as far as we got. Humidity was unbelievable and very hot, hard to deal with after Adelaide's dry heat.

Lots of new birds including

Forest Kingfisher (looking a little lost) :-)

Helmeted Friarbird

Rajah Shelduck

Northern Fantail - Juvenile

Striated Heron - Juvenile

Grey-tailed tattler

and about Twenty more :-) Dipped on the Rufous Owl at Botanic Gardens

Will put up a full list a little later once I have things sorted.

Very nice photos, I really like the Forest Kingfisher on the rainforest sign!

Beautiful pictures, especially the Tattler. I have not found the Rufous Owl either and the humidity can be daunting. There was a Striated Heron fishing in the pond near the picnic tables last time I was at the Botanical Gardens. Seems like a rewarding trip.

I must get myself up to Darwin flights are so cheap these days. I went to Fogg Dam many years ago, 1982 actually, long before digital photography was even thought of and remember using up a whole film of 36 exposures on some Bee-eaters. The humidity can be oppresive.

Two of these would have been ticks for me, Helmeted Friarbird and the Northern Fantail but your Striated Heron - Juvenile is a much better photograph than the one I have.

If you go to Darwin and Fogg Dam then McMinns Lagoon and further away the Mamukala Wetlands are also worth a visit. Timing seems to be important. We were there late May but returned in middle October to find numerous species of birds concentrated outside the large hide at Mamukala. Sue

Sounds like you had a great trip, Rick. And some great shots of the birds is a real bonus.

Maybe crop the first pic so the sign just reads Forest :)

Great photos. Lol I like Shorty's suggestion with the crop. Same as reflex 2 new species for me and the same one. Much better photo of the Shelduck than what I have.
