Great Barrier Reef

David Attenborough's The Great Barrier Reef on ABC TV tonight was both spectacular & intriguing. What an astounding, virtually incomprehensible phenomenon it is that some Australian governments should deliberately act to destroy The Reef. We could be forgiven for thinking that alien creatures with no understanding or appreciation at all of one of Earth's magnificent wonders have conspired to begin destroying it.

Didn't see it, I was watching his Frozen Planet episode.  My number one hero David Attenborough. I don't know how he stays positive really.  All the places he has been, what he has seen, the wonder and splender of nature; but must break his heart what he discoveres at the hands of humans and their actions.

I imagine world heritage, wonder of the world, biggest reef on earth, still hundreds if not thousands of life forms still to be discoverd, huge breeding ground for marine life, major tourism draw card.....all means nothing really.  Would not surprise if governments see it as a magor liability with the dam reef getting in the way of shipping, dieing from silt and pestacide run off from farming, and a perfect place to do a bit of mining if it were not for those bloody greenies.

I agree with you Woko. It really was spectacular & intriguing. I turned over when it finished and then watched the Frozen Planet equally magnificent.

David Attenborough is an absolute inspiration in his unwavering enthusiasm and it is sad and probably a bit selfish on my part to think that this will probably be his last major documentry. David Attenborough would have to be the best wildlife presenter in the world and turns 90 next month. Recently voted as Britain's greatest living national treasure.

I really enjoyed the program and Ill be tuning in for episode 2 tomorrow night. It really is an amazing and wondrous place and Woko I share your disbelief and frustration that the future of the reef  could be so recklessly compromised.

I was listening to a radio interview during the week and it suggetsed that week 2 would have a focus on the GBR islands and particularly Lady Elliott Island that is a little piece of paradise near Bundaberg

Pacman, we are almost up to the last episode, but did you see the programe last week.

I was so excited when David was on Herin Island, it's a woderful place.  There wa scene where he is standing on the Notthern beaches, and as he talking a shadow just cruises by a couple meters in from the water line.  Not sure what shark it is but we saw the very same shadow.  It was so surreal.  The kids were happily swimming and I casually go is that a shark.. turtle...big fish comming?  The kids casually come in, and we wait then walk along beside it for a while in amazement. It kept on cruising, the kids went back to swimming, and my wife and I sat back down to take it all in.

There has been a show on Saturday evenings called Shark.  It has been a winderful series as well.  On Ten I think, but could be Go or One as well. I get lost in the hords of channels.

Heron Island - a bit of history but I spent Dec 1974 - Jan 1975 working as a porter on Heron Island betwen senior and college; many excellent days and I still remember that a can of beer was $2
