Melbourne Trip

I went on another trip to Melbourne for last week to visit family and friends and for a bit of a holiday. I managed to go birding a few times and on the way I went to Cyanide Dam in Chiltern again. It is a great spot.

I saw a Yellow-footed Antechinus run across the track in front of me and then it sat on a log for a second before jumping behind it. It jumped on and off the log really quickly so it was really hard to get photos, I managed to get one.

The day after we arrived, I went to the Werribee Western Treatment Plant and I saw 8 new birds there. Brolga, Australian Shelduck, White-fronted Chat, Hoary-headed Grebe, Banded Stilt, Wood Sandpiper and White-winged Black Tern.

Wood Sandpiper:

White-fronted Chat:

Banded Stilt:

Australian Shelduck:

I went to Mill Park Lakes a few times because they are close to where I was staying. I saw a Little Grassbird there which is new for me but didn't manage to get a good shot of it.

Hardhead:

Australian Wood Duck

Chestnut Teal:

Yellow-billed Spoonbill:

On the way back to Sydney we stopped in Chiltern again and I saw another Antechinus and got a shot of a Fuscous Honeyeater which there are lots of there.

Fuscous Honeyeater:

Yellow-footed Antechinus:

It is so hard getting sharp photos of the Antechinus, they are so fast.

Also the day before I went to Melbourne I went to see the Paradise Shelduck that is (or was) at Bushells Lagoon near Windsor.

Wow, what gerat photos, that would be 4 new ticks for me.

My favourite is the Hardhead and the first Antechinus photo.

Well done! These are magnificent shots. There would have been quite a few ticks in this lot for me.

Looks like there is some kind of beetle in the grass in photo #3.

You really need to go to the Western Treatment Plant in Spring if you can, as the bird life explodes, and so do the number of photographers. ;)

Wonderful shots. I am still hoping to see a Banded Stilt one day. Sue

Yes, I would love to go in spring or summer when all the waders are there.

Great set of shots Tim.

Antechinus are gold, we see them at night when we're up at Gluepot.

Wood Sandpipers look so dainty and that Paradise Shelduck is great sighting.

Looks like a great trip and lots of good shots.

Agree with Devster the first Antechinus and the HardHead Duck are great photos. You really caught the Antechinus in a classic pose.

Seems like you had a great trip with some great photos. I'd never heard of an Antechinus until now!
