I'm thinking of buying a flash extender...
Are they any good and at what distance are they still usable...?
Also, just where can they be purchased...I live in Adelaide.
I'm using an SB700 flash (Nikon)

I'm looking too Ron. From my research, I'd say there are three main choices:
Better Beamer: folds down but fiddly to assemble. Attaches to the flash with velcro. Can be bought in Australia: http://www.feathersandphotos.com.au/forum/showthread.php?1372-Better-Beamer-in-Australia
Harbor digital flash extender: more secure, easy and snug fit to flash unit, doesn't fold down so bulky to carry. Rather pricey. No Australian distributor.
Cheap generic Chinese knock-offs of Better Beamer (e.g. JJC) - plentiful on ebay. Haven't found any user comments.
There is another promising one in the pipeline called Magbeam which will hit the market in the next few months: http://petapixel.com/2016/03/01/magbeam-2-1-flash-extender-gobo-projector/
A cheap option is the Rogue Safari flash extender (about $25 from Ted's). It uses a Fresnel beam to magnify the camera's pop-up flash. Doesn't sound promising, but I have one and it works well, up to about 15m.
Good article on the better beamer here: http://www.digitalbirdphotography.com/7.9.html
Just remember they can be a bit flimsy and in forests often fall off /get knocked off.
Harbour is my first choice but bulky for travelling. I'm not across the Magbeam option yet.

Just had a look. I remember that thread well. Whatever happened to AnnieJ and Owl of Kedumba or windshear?

You can get flash extenders off eBay now so cheaply, it's barely worth making your own. For example: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JJC-Flash-Multiplier-Extender-for-NIKON-SB-900-SB-910-300mm-Telephoto-Lens-Use-/251873598545?hash=item3aa4d61c51:g:qbkAAOSweW5U~qaN and JJC stuff is usually pretty good.

And very fattening. But unless you can compare the distance that you get from one vs the other, it's not a fair comaparison.
