I was surprised (and pleased) to find a number of birds i have not seen before, where i walk in inner sydney canal greenway walk.  Can anyone tell me what this one is?  The photo is terrible, I think there was a yellow colour but it was faint, with a vertical stripe pattern.  It had a loud squawk.

Looks like a Red Wattle Bird, you can just see the faint "wattles" at the on the top of the neck, I think. Photos aren't too bad, give yourself time and practice, he should get better. Not sure what see rings your on, but I use a "sports action" mode for anything that is likely to move on me. My eyes and hands aren't good enough for handheld and manual focus at the same time!

Definitely Red Wattlebird. These things are often the bane of my birding days. Extremely common, vocal and active in my area. They chase away other birds and constantly distract me from the task at hand :-P.

I do quite like their silly, abrupt squawk. Especially when it erupts out of them so violently that it looks like they weren't expecting it at all. Their whole body convulses backwards. Need to get a good photo of one doing that one day, but for now they'll just be a bit of a nuisance for me!

Thank you all for this.  Thanks for the tip Dale, that's good to know.

I was walking along hearing the squawk without really taking much notice until i realised that I didn't know the bird that was making it and had a look around for it. But  I didnt see it actually make the noise!
