The Pure Joy of Flying - Pelicans

Was tossing up whether to sell my point-and-press Canon SX50HS to help fund a 600mm lens for my Nikon DSLR. Took the Canon out to Cabbage Tree Point on Moreton Bay to see how it performed, given its extra long lens (1200mm) capability. The subject was the relatively easy to photograph Pelicans. Am happy with the results so may keep the Canon for those extra long shots when needed. Appreciate any feedback, good or not.

Such beautiful birds, almost bring a smile to my face when i see them airborne.

I love that photo of light pole balancing act landing

Dont take life too seriously, it never ends well

Your Canon would definately be a good backup to keep, I rekon. Love the one where it is landing on a light pole- never seen them do that. What is the thing sticking down form above?

It's not a day at the beach without a pelican in flight shot. I got a couple of shots on the weekend with my new tamron 150-600 and with your permission I could post them in this thread for you to see if you like. I have a Nikon D5500.

Thanks Ryu, The bird was actually taking off when I took this. Looking at it now it seems one foot may have slipped as it was about to launch. This was taken at a boat ramp so I assume the thing sticking down is another light facing downwards.

Love to see them Brian. As I said am looking at a 600mm lens which costs a lot of money. If I can get away with the Canon that would be good. But, my mind is still open. Cheers.

These are the originals, no cropping, it caught me by suprise so not the greatest shots. From memory I had the camera set to sport mode F6.3,7.1, 1/1600sec, ISO-400. Lens @ 380mm.

They are nice shots but I think if you bought a lens for your dslr you would get much better quality shots especially if you learn to use all the settings correctly.

Thanks Brian. There is a lot more detail in these shots than in mine I guess because the Canon lens gets pretty soft at or near full extension. Clearly a difference. Cheers

Thanks Timothy. I agree with you. Might do as Ryu says and keep the Canon as a backup. Cheers

It depends on what you want to achieve and what you can afford mhubbard1.

While your photos are nice, like Tim said "if you bought a lens for your dslr you would get much better quality shots especially if you learn to use all the settings correctly."

I had a point and shoot and wanted to upgrade but knew nothing other than the auto function. Before I upgraded, I utubed as much as I could about photography and using DSLR cameras. I then borrowed my brother in laws 500d with the standard lens and practiced, practiced and practiced.

Once I started getting better and my passion grew, thats when I could justify spending the money to upgrade my lens.

If you have the time to practice, the money to buy a new lens and most importantly the passion and patience to learn and improve I say go for it.

If you just want to dabble and do bit here and there, then just learn to improve on your point and shoot by using some of the other settings.

Hope this has helped.

Thanks Devster. Your advice really gets to the heart of the issue. Already I am finding that some research I have done is starting to pay dividends. IE: if you want better images get closer to the subject. So I think I will continue to persevere with both cameras by using manual settings and keep a lookout for a longer lens on ebay or Gumtree. Once again thanks for your input, much appreciated. Sorry for the tardy response, Have been on grandfatherly duties away from home without the computer. Cheers.
