Hi All,
I am recently retired and my wife and I have started caravanning which has reignited my interest in photography and snapping birds - two pastimes that fit in nicely with travelling in this great country. Also where I live - and formerly lived on the Gold Coast - have been great spots for birdlife, so I have started placing my humble efforts on Birds in Backyards. My photography is improving I think so I am hopeful of capturing images that will hopefully reach the lofty standards in this forum.
Welcome to the forums .... i have enjoyed your photos and look forward to more. Your free roaming lifestyle is ideal for seeing a great variety of birdlife. I was wondering why the 'alcatraz' nickname and then i recalled the birdman of alcatraz!
I remember the birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Franklin Stroud. He was incarcerated for the last 54 years of his life, of which 42 were in solitary confinement.
Interesting read if you are interested.

Welcome to the forum alcatraz and look forward to seeing more from you.

Cheers Reflex. When I was fairly young I would have seen the movie several times. In reality the birds kept Stroud sane for all those years in Alcatraz. Hoping it will work for me too!
For what it's worth, I recall research that showed a positive correlation between natural surroundings & mental health so I'd say birding may be the go for you in retirement, alcatraz.
I guess the obverse may well be the case, too: the greater the land clearing the higher the incidence of insanity.
Spot on Woko! No trees,no birds.
Hi, I'm just down the road from you. Doug Larsen Park has some worthy subjects.

Thanks Michael, will check it out. Spend a lot of time at Eagleby wetlands as it's so close to home and has a terrific variety of birds. But like to try new places. Cheers, Murray
