Dodging the Weather

After some severe storms lately it was nice to have ONE day between cold fronts, so took the opportunity last Saturday to mosey on down to Meningie for the weekend.

Day started with a kayak trip over the Coorong to the beach in search of some Salmon (caught one) with some birding thrown in. Quite quiet really, but with a little slithering over dunes managed some nice Oystercatchers, picking through the storm damaged cockles.

Choice in the afternoon was drink beer or drive down to Kingston on the off chance of seeing a recently sighted ArcticTern ,Kingston won :-)

Early on the drive down spied a couple of Great Creasted Grebe doing the mating dance, magic to watch but a little far away for any quality images.

No AT but some nice action with Caspian and Crested Terns feeding in the outflow from the boat ramp channel. All was not lost in the new bird stakes as managed to spy four sweet little Pacific Golden Plover, tick for me.

On the way back took the Coorong Loop Road, just for a look, and was rewarded with a couple of Hooded Plover on one of the inland lakes.

Sorry to be so long winded, more of a trip report really:-)

Great images Rick, you guy's deserve a day out after all that you have copped recently. Hope you had a beer as well.

Great pics Rick! Better than a beer I suspect.

Great day out and some great great photos.

Ones that really stand out for me are the tern flight shots - very crisp and dramatic. I like the crested tern shot with the tail fanned out - at first i thought that was a photo of the top of the terns body but now I see its the underside with the tern's head twisted almost 180 degrees around - is that right, i still can't really work out that head angle! Great shot!

Nice ones as usual Rick. I too love the Crested Tern in flight, very odd pose you've captured. I love a good story to go with the pictures.
