We're in North Brisbane. This year we've been hearing a bird call (last 6 weeks) that starts around 4am and stops about the time the magpies start warbling.
It's definitely not a koel but it is as loud and repetitive. I'm certain I hear another responding a distance away.
The sound is rather pretty, like someonewhistling the first few notes of a happy tune.
any help to ID appreciated.
Pied butcherbirds sound like a person whistling.
Willie wagtails call at night.
We have loads of butcherbirds about but not the same song. We only have the odd wagtail about but I grew up on a farm with plenty and have never heard this before. I was thinking maybe another migratory bird?
I don't want to push the Pied butcherbird if you think it is not one, BUT ...
At this time of year, in the spring, the males have very different "courting" songs, which starts in the quiet about an hour or so before dawn and stops when the normal bird calls start. So, if the sound has the same tonal quality as a butcherbird, there is a fair chance it is a young male out a-courtin' ...
I noticed one a few years ago near my place and it was quite beautiful and haunting.
Cheers

What about a Grey Shrike-Thrush? They have a huge range of calls.
