Birds over Geelong at night

Around Geelong consistently at around 9 pm, large numbers of birds appear near the Geelong city centre. They are all moving in the same direction en masse and don't seem to make much noise. What are they? By the time they arrive it is usually too dark to get a good look, and the street lights make the already otherwise difficult task of photographing them impossible.

Could they be flying foxes?

Possibly Common Starlings moving to their roosting place, they used to be seen often in the tens of thousands around the Tasman Bridge in Hobart.

I just watched a video of flying foxes and the flapping action is consistent with what I saw. It was not birdlike at all. Now I'm sure that's what they are.

Glad to have been able to help. I have had a number around home at night for the past few weeks as well, despite being 12.5kms from our nearest major roost
