Hi folks
I wish to report a sighting of a Striated Heron (a.k.a. Mangrove Heron and Mangrove Bittern) at Bermagui, (Baragoot Lake), far south coast of NSW on Friday 31 July 2009, at 2:30pm.
It is recorded as uncommon south from Sydney. So this is apparently an unusual record.
For photos and a full report, pls see: http://peonyden.blogspot.com/2009/08/rare-glimpse-of-mangrove-heron.html
My favourite image is the one with the shadow of the bird in flight visible on the sand below.
Cheers
Denis
Hi Denis - as I have commented previously, I can only admire your ornithological scholarship without being able to comment outside the pictorial aspects of your blog. As an exercise in photo journalism you have excelled in your reportage and presentation of the Striated Heron.

HI Denis
Thank you for the info there are lots around here.
Hi Denis, they are fairly common here in Newcastle though very shy.
Are you familiar with Birdline NSW http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Culture=en-AU&Birdline=2&Path=8? I use it to report and stay abreast of unusual sightings.
So interesting Denis - thank you for the link. You must have felt so pleased to have got him. I love the "shadow" pic too - and really like the angle of his wings in that shot. Great stuff.
Thanks for comments, Lyn, Marj, Tark and Smeedingo.
.
Marj, I was hoping there would be a place to "officially": report an unusual record. Thanks for that link.
Much appreciated. I have lodged a report and bookmarked the site.

Thanks Denis, I enjoyed reading about it
Thanks Birdgirl
Nice that people have followed the link.
After all this time on this forum I have still not mastered the art of posting photos.
I tried in this case, and it did not work.
But I can do a "link".
Cheers

Thanks for sharing Denis, love the shadow shot.
The birdline sites feed information to the State and National Bird Atlasses - I guess you could contact them directly.

Thanks Tassie.
Someone on my blog likened the shadow image to a "Stealth Bomber". I really like it, myself.

Many thanks for those links. Much appreciated.

Well done Denis, great sighting. The photos are good too. I have only ever seen it once in Brisbane.
Cheers, Owen.
