Normally (and it the case with this shot) I pull up very slowly in the car and then move very carefully to get the shot, this shot taken out the passenger window from the drivers seat, I'm lucky I managed it at my age...remember to to turn off the engine as it is surprising how much vibration it causes.
That kookaburra looks like a gangsta kookaburra, also, I find it amazing that I was browsing through the birds when I saw the bee eater and I thoguht "What a wonderful bird". Isn't that weird it turned up here 2 days after!
Beautiful work Ed. I can't get that close to a Bee Eater that's for sure. You've done a great job with the lighting and the Depth of Field. Well done all round.
They are all outstanding, ed. The bee-eater must qualify as a macro shot. :-) I like the one of the B-b R; they're usually such a shy bird but he doesn't even know you're there. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic shots Ed, specially like the Bee Eater,do you see many of them where you are? thier colours are just amazing. Were you able to observe behaviour or was it just a fleeting sighting? The Blue winged Kookaburra is so different to the Laughing k that I see many of here in the Dandenongs.... he looks kind of mean!
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Thanks all
Smee, don't think its a juv, but it is a lot darker than they are normally.
Trev, thank mother nature for the lighting, very late pm.
George, the BBR was fully aware that I was in the hide (permenant one) and would spend a few seconds out in the open look up at me and run for cover, only to creep out again a few moments later.
Hev, lots of bee-eaters on the towncommon, many breeding at the moment so lots of chances to watch and photo them. What is the bird on your av? looks like one of the Asian Kingfisher but I can't put a name to it?
hello Ed finally sorted we are coming out to townsville tomorrow afternoon for the common , checked out a map any suggestions as to the best direction to go it is larger than what i thought
hi Hev, googled him and I'd be suprised if it is not a BBK.
Hi Joanneh, always tricky to send people to look for birds as the little darlings are never where you send people. Having said that follow the road it is the same one in and out. The observation tower, the first wildlife viewpoint and freshwater hide have been the best spots for the last couple of weeks. All are signposted. Remember to keep a look out at all times because things will turn up where least expected.I may be out on the common PM Saturday, maybe our paths will cross. (I drive a little silver ford and if out of the will be carrying a large camera.)
thanks ed nice info we drive either a red mitsubishi car or a 4wd prado not sure which one , my dh has vieo and binnoculars he is my spotter will keep a eye out

Hi Ed, I think it's a Black Back Kingfisher. I took it in the Kinabatangan jungle in Borneo, Malaysia.
