while taking microlight shots at the weekend I discovered airfields are great places for birds of prey, short grass, lots of rodents, spotted this guy sitting patiently waiting for a catch as aircraft buzzed around him noisily.

Beautiful bird the Nankeen Kestrel up close, love the photos, but what are microlight shots? I assume low light?
lol I hadn't thought of that... I have a lot of 'microlight' shots of lyrebirds in the rainforest but no, this weekend was taking pictures of these microlights!
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Ha ha ha Hev.....low light . Good one Amateur! You can be excused for not understanding Hev speak!!
She is an adrenaline junky.... but takes the odd great shot.
Top shots Hev

Birdie.. I'll take that as a compliment as I'm sure it was intended as one:)

Nice photos Hev,which airfield were you at?
Nice shots Hev....well done.
thanks tassie. I was at Traralgon airfield, (Gippsland)there again today and think the nankeen Kestrel was onto me and my stalking/snapping...so took off to another post when I got close!

Beautiful sharp shots Hev. Like the blue sky ...! I've found BOP hang around model airfields too
Hi Hev
Just a bit of bird spotting I wanted to share (but have no photo to prove it!)
Guess what we saw the other night? A southern boobook owl! We were just driving home from basketball in the rain and it was on the road. It flew up into a nearby tree and we were able to creep to within about 5 m of it and watch it for a while. No camera, but so lucky to see it. I have only seen 3 wild owls in my life - a barn owl on a neighbours roof when I was a child, a powerful owl on a night walk in Blackbutt Reserve in Newcastle and this one.
Hi Birdgirl, wow that must have been awesome. you have seen 3 more owls than me! I've only seen Tawny frogmouths ...and I don't think they are even in the owl family.
Just posting a pic taken at the airfield - a masked lapwing , which I hadn't ever noticed has spurs on its wings untill Tassie pointed them out in a photo he took on another thread, now I wonder how on earth I could have not seen them before in photos!
and one I took through the window this afternoon in between downpours, a white eared honeyeater, I could even see droplets of water on the end of its tail through the binoculars!
thanks for sharing your owl experience.

Nice photo, I haven't seen one before they have beautiful colours. Same with you Heva, I've only seen a few tawny's....
