OK, picture 1 & 2 are of the birds I ID'd as Juvenile Australasian Gannets in my posting. Identical bird and markings so can someone clarify which bird it is please?
The bird here is a juvenile masked booby and your one is an immature Australasian Gannet Birdie? Your photo Birdie shows the Gannet, as shown with the black markings, but the brown marks it as not an Australian Gannet but as a Juv. Masked Booby, also the underwing marking of Bygum's shot look identical to the Juv. Masked Booby in my field guide. I also believe that ID on the link is wrong as the eye appears to be 'on the beak' which is characteristic of Boobies and not Gannets. Plus the brown fade to white with dots on Bygum's shot is also another characteristic of a juvenile masked brown booby. I hope I haven't confused you all, I know I've confused myself :D
Hey Amateur thanks for trying , but in my Simpson and Day, and online Id's the Juvenile Australasian gannet is definitely brown with no black. The distinctive white dot like patterning is identical to every picture of a JAG that I have seen. Can't speak for bygum's 2nd photo as it looks like it has been heavily contrasted in editing.
The Juv masked booby does not appear to have the dot tracings that are evident here.
Lol, just read the description in my S&D as well and it is brown, I think the painter ran out of brown or something, isn't the picture black and white in your S&J as well? I think I'll keep clear of this, I don't know much about seabirds, though hopefully I'll see some next year, we're going on a cruise and there will be plenty of debate then :D
"In immature birds, the head and upperparts are mostly brown with scattered amounts of white spotting. Small flocks are sometimes seen soaring above the ocean, and an individual bird will suddenly fold its wings back and dive spectacularly into the water." From Birds In backyards ID of juvenile Australasian gannets.
From the picture on this site.
No Amateur my S& D is very recent and the paintings are identical to the birds being discussed.... all of them.
The only seabird that I have studied at any length is this one, LOL and I was with them for hours just 4 days ago. That is the only reason I am interested in this debate at all.
See you round Amateur
Well Guys at least we can say with out any doubt it as brought life to the page and which ever bird you think it is I will stay with Boobie. now I'm going to bed Night.
A Photo is only as good as the eyes that look at it.
Bygum- were you in a boat when you took this? if not I think all pics are of Juv. Australian Gannets. Because... quote "masked booby-feeding habit is marine, pelagic; often far from land beyond the shelf-edge over deep water" Michael Morecombefield guide.
I can see how you might think it a masked booby, they are similar aren't they ?(to juv. Australasian Gannets)but reckon the locations they were spotted is the key.
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Hey Heva where abouts in Vic moving there my self in July.
lol ok back to the debate Birdie your on the wrong bird it's not a brown Boobie I'm saying it a masked Booby, I really think though unless we had both birds side by side we will never know, I use the Slater field Guide to Australian Birds Revised and updated.
A Photo is only as good as the eyes that look at it.
Hi bygum, I live in the Dandenongs, where are you moving to/from? better bring your warm clothes if from Queensland lol!
re. the masked booby- I think you are making a booby thinking it is one lol! as I say [b]unless[b] you were in a boat taking that shot as masked boobies are observed much further out to sea not close to mainland.
As the real estaters say...it's all about "location location location!"
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
hi bygum.... but where did you actually take the shot?!c'mon stop with the suspense lol!
Albury/wodonga ..bit warmer there than the Dandenongs. Try and get down to werribee treatment plant for birding, an excellent spot.

Sorry Bygum, I knew you meant a masked Booby ... that was my boob ( LOL)
So I am curious, is Bribie just getting too populated ? You sounded a bit disenchanted with it that's all, or maybe I read your post wrong.
Cheers
I must have read the post wrong Bygum. I would imagine it is a nice place to live. SO are you returning to Vict then?
Helps to have friends around to share stuff with. I am so lucky that my closest female friends in the world have all but one moved to the SE Qld from all over Australia & New Zealand. All I need now is for one of them to get interested in bird watching , as that, I do alone as nobody is into it that I know!
Some nice BiF photos, very hard to get clearly, espcially like the Kite photo, thanks for sharing.

Yes it does thanks, the juvenile brown booby does not have a white but rather a brown belly in my books.
