On the Garden Shed

Found this shy bird on the to of my garden shed. I live right next to the Brisbane River and in The Slaters Field Guide To Australian Birds it says they live far from water. Any thoughts.

Great shots. Was thinking maybe a White faced Heron.Love the last shot with him on top of the shed.

I sometimes see a white faced heron at the creek near my home, however I have also occasionally seen one in my backyard and on the roof of the shed in the yard behind mine. I have also seen one "fishing" at an ornamental goldfish pond at the school where I teach. I would have thought that, being waders, their habitat would be near water.

From BIBY birdfinder "White-faced Herons can be found anywhere where there is water, from tidal mudflats and coastal reefs to moist grasslands and gardens"

This looks very like a bird I saw near my parents place today, in the hills heading up towards Maleny.

I had a white faced Heron land in my backyard in Toowoomba and we have had an extreme water shortage for years so maybe they know something we don't :)
great shots QLDBird :)

They will go everywhere from what I have seen. We used to get them in Montville, which is a fair flight from the sea though there is a large dam there.
I especially love the first shot.
I have a funny one somewhere of a WF Heron on a rooftop. I'll dig it out LOL

Caught this fine fellow having a bad hair day on the roof at work last year!

BTW don't really understand the "far from water" thing... they are always somewhere near water of some sort.

Nice shots. We have had a pair flying over our house for a few weeks, first time since we moved in about 12 years ago. There are plenty of artificial wetlands and dams around here

They are a great bird to take for sure, the shed one for me.

A Photo is only as good as the eyes that look at it.
