NSW birds

I am down in NSW and have seen far more birds than I was able to stop for unfortunately.
But here are a few shots
Came to a screeching stop on the main road when I saw my first BOP, I think it is a kestrel

Brown gerygone I think

my favourite duck...the woodies

Went to Blackbutt reserve in Newcastle, and took this in spite of my inner feelings, he looked so unhappy

Just had to add this one, as it was my first experience with a bush stone Curlew, albeit in an aviary. As I looked down from the platform I could see heaps of birds etc, but couldn't work out what this strange grinding/hissing noise was. Then I found it, this fellow was warning off a dove
Hilarious noise.... very scary LOL

Hope to see more on this trip

Cheers

A very nice set birdie all very well taken,

A Photo is only as good as the eyes that look at it.

Amateur

Your bird of prey is a juvenile Black Shouldered Kite, I saw some on my trip hovering, they are the coolest! Lol, I've been living in NSW for my whole life and you've managed to spot more BoP then I have nad I've never seen a Gerygone, have fun on your trip, I'm looking forward to some more good photos.

Thanks Bygum, I was fairly happy.
Amateur, thank you so much for the correct ID on BOP. I knew there was something familiar about the face but I never thought of the BSK. I saw a few of them up on the power lines on the roads in the Northern rivers area. It was sooo hard for me to keep driving past all those big rivers and not make a detour!! What an absolutely special part of Australia that run is. I would love to take a month to cruise down it.
Tomorrow I am leaving for Sydney for a few days and want to spend a few hours on the central coast and Hawkesbury river areas.
Watch this space!!! :')
I am pretty excited about the prospect of a totally new environment. Hope my daughter can stand the pace though, as she will be waiting for me . The only way I can do it is to compromise... she gets the camera for some of the time.

Cheers

Yes, I really hate caged birds cathshane, even when they are in a protected environment for a good reason. It breaks my heart to see a bird who is meant to fly like the wind, but instead they can only climb the bars.
Tassie, thanks for looking , hey do you remember telling me once about the stone curlews and their noise? The noise I heard was very strange but not the full call that they do.
BTW Amateur, the gerygone was on a farm property out the back of Port Macquarie, there were heaps of them their, and some Rosellas which I forgot to post.

Cheers

Hi Birdie - great set of photos. I agree with Amateur - the juvenile black-shouldered kite and letter-winged kite both have that rufous marking on the top of the head and going around the collar like hair and beard.
Blackbutt is also a good place for free birds - always lots of sulphur-crested cockatoos, ravens and water birds. I saw a powerful owl there on a night walk
