I am really happy with this photo but am stumped to what species of robin it is. It is either a young bird or a female. Any suggestions? Pic was taken at Mt macedon Vic

Hi berldo,
.
My first guess would be a thornbill of sorts, possibly a juvenile brown thornbill? I've only seen one thornbill before but it had exactly the same shape, like a little round ball with a head and a tail. According to my reference book juveniles have a darker eye which becomes red as they mature.

female Hooded Robin
Yes, looks like the female hooded robin, has the little pale patch under the chin and white stripes on wings and tail.Should be a male nearby.
Good call on the female hooded robin. Crossed checked my three ID books and they all point the same way.... such a shame I didn't see the male as well, at least I know I have them in the area. Will post my eastern yellow robin pic soon....
Hmm, hard one! I think it could be a Jacky Winter.
Yes that crossed my mind but I'm sticking with female Hooded Robin. The wings look too dark and seem to me to have that clear white wing bar.
d'awww!! That's adorable!!!
